What a Winter of Meltwater Does to a Lift Cable
Cable almost always fails at the bottom, and there is a reason for that in this part of Will County. A car driven home over salted roads parks in the garage and drips for hours, and the puddle it leaves sits exactly where the cable loops through the bottom bracket. Chloride does the rest. The strands go rust-orange, then furry, then two or three break and the whole load shifts onto the ones still holding.
You can check this without touching anything. With the door closed, look at the last stretch of cable above each bottom corner. Bright steel is healthy. Rust-brown, fraying, flattened or kinked means it is on its way out, and both sides get replaced together because both have been standing in the same water for the same number of winters.
When One Side Starts Sitting Low
The first symptom is usually a door that no longer meets the floor evenly, or one hanging at a visible angle with daylight down one edge. That means a cable has slipped off its drum or come adrift at the bracket, and the door is now hanging on one side of a system designed to share the load between two.
Stop using the opener at that point. Every cycle drags the door further out of square, bends track, and can pull the good cable off its drum as well. It also leaves a door with no counterbalance on one side sitting directly above whatever is parked underneath it.
What Actually Pulled the Cable Off
Cable failure is rarely a standalone event. A snapped spring drops the door and lets slack build on both drums, so the cable unwinds and re-winds outside its groove. A worn bottom bracket chews the loop. A drum that has crept along the shaft lets one side wind at a different rate to the other. Fitting new cable without working out which of those did it just resets the clock.
So the visit covers the whole counterbalance rather than the broken part alone: drums checked and set true on the shaft, spring tension corrected, brackets and bearings inspected, new cable seated properly in its groove, then the door balanced by hand before the opener is reconnected and its limits reset.
