The Right Grease, and Where It Must Not Go

This is the part people find surprising. A garage door track is not a bearing surface. The roller is meant to roll along it, and a greased track invites the wheel to skid instead. It also traps the grit and salt that ride in on the car all winter, and the resulting paste grinds away at both roller and track.

Tracks get cleaned, not lubricated. A rag and a little solvent along the running surface, debris cleared out of the bottom of the vertical, and that is the whole job. If a door still binds on a clean track, the fault is alignment or a roller, and the answer is never more lubricant.

Some lubricants thicken enough below freezing that they add drag instead of removing it, which is the last thing a marginal door needs in January. We use formulations that stay workable at the temperatures an unheated garage here actually reaches, and we go lighter rather than heavier, because a thick film simply collects dust.

In a detached garage where damp and road salt work on bare steel all winter, the protective film matters more than the friction saving. Springs, bearings and exposed cable ends get covered deliberately. A heated attached garage needs less of that, gets less of it, and the visit is shorter as a result.
