If the existing opener is a sound unit with working safety sensors, a retrofit controller can add app control without touching the motor. It wires into the same terminals as the wall button and brings its own door-position sensor. That is the cheaper route and it is often the right one.

Replacing makes more sense when the opener is old enough that parts are scarce, when the door is heavy enough to want a belt drive or a wall-mounted jackshaft unit, or when the safety sensors on it are a type nobody stocks. On a wall-mount install the motor comes off the ceiling and moves to the side of the opening, which is quiet, and on a heavy clad door it tends to be the better mechanical answer anyway.

The useful features are the dull ones. An alert when the door opens. A scheduled close at a set time each night. A warning if the door has been standing open longer than you meant it to. Households that come and go through the garage get the most out of those three.

Voice control through the usual assistants handles status and closing. Opening by voice alone is deliberately restricted on most systems, and that restriction is a feature rather than a gap. Battery backup is worth specifying so the door still cycles when the power drops and nobody is feeling for the release cord in the dark.
