Two extension springs are designed to pull against each other. The Containment Cable Is Not Optional

A stretched extension spring stores its energy in a straight line, and when it breaks the loose end travels along that line at speed. That line runs directly over where the car parks. A safety containment cable threaded through the middle of the spring and anchored at both ends turns a projectile into a spring that whips a few inches and stops.

Plenty of older installations here never had them fitted, and plenty more had them taken off during a repair and never put back. We fit them as standard. If you look up and see bare springs with nothing running through the centre, that is worth a call whether or not the door is currently misbehaving.

Pulleys, Hooks and the Parts That Wear Beside the Spring

The load path runs spring, pulley, cable, bottom bracket. Sheaves seize and cut a flat spot into the cable running over them. S-hooks open up under repeated shock loading. The track hanger the rear pulley bolts to loosens in dry joist timber. Any one of those will chew through a new spring quickly.

So the whole run gets gone over while it is slack. Cables are replaced as a pair, worn hooks and pulleys are swapped rather than reused, and the door is cycled and rechecked for even lift on both sides before we pack up.

Is torsion better than extension?

For most doors, yes. Torsion is steadier through the travel and safer in failure. That does not mean your extension setup needs ripping out. On a light single door with sound hardware it will run for years. We convert where the headroom allows and the door has grown heavy, and we say plainly when it is not worth doing.

A spring snapped and the door slammed down. Is the door itself damaged?

Possibly. Check the bottom section for a bowed or split edge, look at whether both cables still sit in their pulleys, and see whether the door meets the floor evenly. A hard drop can also bend the vertical track low down. We go through all of it before fitting springs, since new springs on a bent door just wear out early.

How can I tell the new springs are set correctly?

Disconnect the opener and lift by hand. The door should feel light through the whole travel, without floating up at the top or running away at the bottom. Uneven gaps at the two jambs with the door halfway up mean one side is pulling harder than the other.
