Torsion Springs Sized to the Door, Not to the Doorway

Reading the Spring Before Ordering One

A torsion spring is defined by four numbers: wire diameter, inside diameter, overall length and wind direction. None of them can be worked out from the width of the door. We measure the wire by counting twenty coils against a rule, read the inside diameter off the cone, and check whether the cone is marked left hand or right hand. Fit the wrong hand and the spring unwinds the moment it takes load.

Where the original springs are still on the shaft they are the best evidence available, and we specify directly from them. Where somebody has already been through once and fitted whatever was on the van that day, the numbers up there may be wrong, and we go back to the door itself to settle it.

The Hardware the Spring Turns On

A spring never works alone. It sits between a centre bearing plate and two end bearing plates, all lag-bolted into the header timber, and on a wide door those lags have spent decades absorbing the torque of every wind-up. Bearings dry out and rumble, the shaft picks up a groove, and the plate slowly works loose in old lumber.

So the shaft gets spun by hand before a new spring goes anywhere near it. A dry bearing takes minutes to swap while the shaft is free and a full teardown once it is loaded again. The cable drums live on the same shaft, and their set screws get checked into the flats, because a drum that has crept sideways will throw the door out of square no matter how well the spring is wound.

What Running the Door Anyway Costs You

The wall button still works when a torsion spring breaks, and that is the trap. The motor pulls, the chain strains, and on a lighter door it may even shift things a few inches. What is happening in those inches is the opener carrying the entire weight of the door through a plastic drive gear designed to carry almost none of it.

The knock-on list is predictable: a stripped gear, a cable jumped off its drum, a top section pulled out of shape at the operator bracket. One repair turns into three. If you heard the bang and the door will not lift, unplug the unit and walk away from it. That single step usually keeps the job confined to the springs.

Yes. A spring loses tension gradually for years before it ever snaps, and a matched pair can both go tired at once without either showing a gap in the coil. Released from the opener, a sound door stays put at waist height. One that sinks is short on tension whatever the coils look like.

Can a tired spring be wound tighter instead of replaced?

Adding turns buys a few weeks and spends whatever life is left. The steel has already fatigued and extra tension pushes it further. We do adjust the wind on a spring that is genuinely just out of setting, but not as a substitute for one that has run out of cycles.

Is there anything worth checking before you arrive?

Two things help. Look for a clear gap in the coil above the door, and check whether the door sits level in the opening or hangs lower on one side. The first confirms it is a spring. The second suggests a cable has come off as well, which changes what we load on the van.
