Why the wide doors break springs first
A wide insulated steel door is heavy. The weight sits across four or five sections and all of it is counterbalanced by springs on one shaft. The opener does not lift the door. It only guides a load the springs have already made close to weightless.
Wide doors also see the most use. Where the garage is the door the family actually walks through, ten or twelve cycles a day is normal, and a spring rated for 10,000 cycles reaches the end of that rating in about three years. Wire size, length, wind direction, cycle rating
A torsion spring is specified by four things: wire diameter, inside diameter, overall length and which way it is wound. Get any of them wrong and the door is out of balance from the first cycle. It drifts open, or slams shut, or quietly wears the opener out early. We measure all four on site instead of guessing from the width of the door.
Cycle rating is the choice you actually get to make. Standard springs are built around 10,000 cycles. High-cycle springs use heavier wire over a longer body and run two to three times that. On a busy double door in a household with teenage drivers, the high-cycle set is usually what stops you seeing us again in three years.
What the visit looks like
We unwind whatever tension is left using winding bars, pull the old spring off the shaft, check the cables and drums while the shaft is accessible, and fit the replacement. Then the door is balanced by hand. Disconnected from the opener it should hold position at knee height and at shoulder height without creeping either way.
If the door has two springs and only one broke, both get replaced. They were installed as a pair, they have run the same cycles, and leaving the survivor buys a second service call inside the year. Springs on a live door hold enough stored energy to break bones. This is not a job for a screwdriver and a stepladder.

My opener runs but the door only lifts a few inches. Is that the spring?
Usually yes. With a broken spring the opener is trying to carry the whole door on its own, hits its force limit and stops. Keep pressing and you can strip the drive gear, which turns one repair into two. Pull the release cord and leave the door down until a technician looks at it.
Can I get the car out before you arrive?
Sometimes, with help. Pull the emergency release and lift with a second person. A wide double door with a dead spring is a heavy, awkward lift and it will drop if you let go. If it does not move easily, leave it. We would rather come out to a closed door than to an injury.
One spring broke. Is the other one still good?
No. On a two-spring door both were wound the same day and have taken the same cycles, so the second is usually within months of the first. Replacing the pair keeps the door balanced and saves a repeat visit.
