Broken Spring on a Joliet Garage Door

Two garages on the same Joliet block can have openings of identical size and still need completely different springs, because what a spring answers to is weight. A solid wood door on an old detached garage, or a wood door somebody later faced with steel, can weigh half again what a thin modern section does. An insulated double door is heavier still.

So the technician measures rather than guesses: wire size, inside diameter, overall length and the direction of wind. Close but wrong is what leaves a door creeping open on its own, dropping the last stretch to the floor, or feeling reasonable in September and far too heavy by February. Where a door has been running undersized springs since the day it was built, we will say so and fit a set rated for what it is actually lifting.

A lot of single-car garages on the east and central side of the city still run their original setup: one spring per side, stretched along the horizontal track and pulling through a pulley. There is nothing wrong with the design. What plenty of them are missing is the containment cable that threads down the middle of the spring, so that when it does break the pieces stay against the wall rather than crossing the garage.

We fit those cables on any extension job where they are absent. If the headroom above the opening allows it, moving the door onto a torsion shaft is worth asking about, since it gives a quieter and better balanced door on a garage that gets used every day. Where the space is not there, extension springs go back in as a matched pair and the door is set level again.
