There is no single right style here because the housing stock is not one thing. A frame house from the early part of the century takes a carriage face with genuine overlay and hardware. A post-war ranch looks right with a long-panel steel door and very little decoration on it. A newer colonial out west carries a raised panel with a row of glazing along the top.

Windows are where people most often overdo or underdo it. A row of lights transforms a blank door and brings daylight into a garage that has none, and obscure or frosted glazing keeps whatever is parked inside out of view from the alley. Placement matters more than how many you order.

Steel with a polyurethane core is the practical default. It is stiff, it holds a factory finish, and on an attached garage sharing a wall with the house the insulation is doing real work all winter. Wood and wood-overlay doors look better than anything else and ask for maintenance in return, particularly on a west-facing opening that takes full afternoon sun and then a Will County winter.

Composite and aluminium each have their place, composite for a wood look that does not want refinishing and aluminium with glass for a modern face. Whatever the material, the finished door is weighed and the springs are specified to that weight, because a heavy custom door hung on hardware sized for the old one ruins both.
