If instead there is a shaft with springs coiled around it directly above the opening, that is a torsion system and a different job.

An extension spring stores its energy stretched out along the track, a few feet above where you park. When it lets go it does not simply drop. It whips, and it travels.
A containment cable threaded through the middle of the spring and anchored at both ends catches it. Older installs around town routinely have none, and it is the first thing we look for. If yours are bare, we fit cables whether or not the spring itself is due.
Replaced in pairs, or converted
Extension springs are rated and sold in pairs, and they stretch at matching rates, so both get changed. Matching matters more here than on a torsion shaft: two springs pulling unequally is precisely what drags one side of a door out of its track. We reset the rear pulleys at the same time and check both cables for fray at the bottom bracket.
On a heavier door, or where the springs have no clear run beside a wall, converting to a torsion shaft is worth a conversation. It is not automatically the right call on a small detached garage with low headroom, and we will tell you when it is not.

Is torsion always better than extension?
Torsion generally runs smoother, lasts longer, and keeps the tensioned hardware out of the parking area. Extension is lighter duty and simpler. On a small older garage with limited headroom, extension is often still the sensible answer.
Only one spring snapped. Do both really need doing?
Yes. They are a matched pair that have taken identical wear. Leaving the survivor up there means one side pulls harder than the other, which is how doors bind and come off track.
The pulleys and brackets look original. Are they worth replacing?
Often, yes. Pulley bearings seize and the sheave wears a groove that saws at the cable. New springs on tired pulleys is a short-lived repair, and the pulley is a small part next to the labour of getting to it.
