Broken Garage Door Springs, Replaced in Naperville

Most Naperville spring calls start the same way. A bang from the garage loud enough to be heard through the house, then a door that will not lift. The spring above the opening has let go, and until it is replaced there is nothing carrying the weight of the door.

BH Garage Door replaces torsion and extension springs across Naperville, from the older garages near downtown to the wide three-bay doors on the south and west sides. Same-day appointments are usually available and broken-spring calls are given priority.

Cycle Counts Run High in a Commuter Town

A spring is rated in cycles, one cycle being one trip up and one trip down. A standard builder spring is rated around ten thousand of them. A Naperville household that runs to the Metra platform in the morning, comes back at night and moves cars in and out on weekends can burn through four or five cycles a day without ever thinking about it.

That is why doors here tend to go at the fifteen to twenty year mark rather than lasting the thirty years people expect. The subdivisions built out along the Route 59 corridor through the 1990s and early 2000s sit right in that window now, and because a whole street went up in the same season, the same failure often works its way down a block over a couple of years. If the garage is your main way into the house, we can fit a higher-cycle spring set on the same shaft so the next one lasts considerably longer.

Three-Car Garages and Mismatched Spring Sets

A lot of Naperville's newer stock has three bays: one double door and one single, side by side. They are not the same door and they do not take the same spring. The double is heavier, and its springs are wound to a different wire size, length and inside diameter, so a technician cannot carry one spare and expect it to cover both openings.

Our trucks carry a working range of torsion springs along with the winding bars to set them, which is why most of these jobs finish in one visit. Where the double door runs two springs we replace both. They were installed as a pair, they have taken the same number of cycles, and leaving the survivor in place gives you an unbalanced door and a second call before long.

What Actually Happens During the Visit

The technician disconnects the opener, checks the door by hand, and measures the old spring for wire size, inside diameter, length and wind direction. Getting any of those wrong is how a door ends up drifting shut on its own or refusing to stay down on the floor.

New springs go on, the shaft is wound to the correct turn count for the door's weight, the cables are seated properly in the drums, and then the door is balanced by hand at waist height. It should hold where you let go of it. After that the opener force settings and the auto-reverse are reset and tested. The price is given to you in person and approved before any of it starts.

Questions

Naperville questions about this job

Something banged in my garage and now the door will not open. Is that the spring?

Almost certainly. A torsion spring lets go with a sound people usually describe as a gunshot, and afterwards you can often see a visible gap in the coil on the bar above the door. The opener may hum, or lift the door a few inches and stop. Leave the door down and book a call.

Can I keep using the door until the weekend?

No. The springs carry the weight of the door, not the opener. Running the motor against a dead spring strips gears, can pull a cable off its drum and can drop the door. If a car is shut in the garage, say so when you book and we will treat it as urgent.

Only one of my two springs broke. Does the other one really need doing?

Yes. They were wound and fitted together and have taken the same cycles, so the intact one is near the end of its own life. Replacing the pair keeps the door balanced and saves a repeat visit a few months later.

Do you work on the older garages near downtown Naperville?

Regularly. Older and detached garages sometimes still run extension springs along the horizontal tracks rather than a torsion bar over the opening. Those need a safety cable threaded through the spring, and we fit them as part of the job where they are missing.
