Lubrication and Tune-Up, Done in the Right Order
Most of the doors we are called to for noise have already been sprayed with something. Usually it is the wrong product, and usually it went on the one surface that should stay dry. WD-40 is a solvent and a water displacer. It is excellent at freeing a seized bolt and it is not a lubricant, and what it mainly does on a garage door is strip out whatever grease was left.

The other common mistake is greasing the inside face of the track. Track is not a bearing surface. The rollers are supposed to roll along it, and a film of grease on the rail collects grit and turns rolling into sliding, which is louder and harder on everything than the noise it was meant to cure.
The Right Product on Each Part
Hinges take a light lithium or silicone spray at the pivot pin, then get wiped so nothing hangs there collecting dust. Rollers depend on type: sealed nylon needs nothing on the wheel, while open-race steel takes a little at the bearing and a touch on the stem where it passes through the hinge barrel.
The torsion spring gets a light coat along the coil so the coils are not binding against each other and so surface rust is slowed. Wiped, not dripping. End bearing plates and the centre bearing get a small amount. On the opener, a chain drive takes a proper chain lubricant, a belt drive takes nothing at all, and a screw drive needs the manufacturer's grease rather than an aerosol. Track gets wiped clean and left dry, and nothing goes near the photo-eye lenses.
Winter Brine in an Attached Garage
This is the local part, and it is different from the corrosion you see in the lakefront towns. Schaumburg drivers spend the winter on salted arterials and the tollway, then park inside an attached garage that sits above freezing. The brine does not stay frozen on the car. It melts off, runs down onto the slab and mists across the lowest hardware on the door.
That is precisely where the bottom brackets, the cable ends and the bottom weatherseal retainer live. Greasing over that residue seals it in against the steel. So part of a proper visit is cleaning the low hardware down before anything is applied, and looking closely at the cable in that spray zone while it is exposed.
Cold Weather, and When It Is Not a Lubrication Problem
Heavy automotive grease stiffens badly as the temperature drops, so a door that was quiet in autumn drags in January, the opener pulls harder, and eventually the force setting trips or somebody turns it up. A spray rated for low temperatures avoids the whole sequence.
The honest limit is worth stating. If a door is still noisy after everything has been correctly lubricated, it is not a lubrication problem. It is worn rollers, hinge barrels gone oval, loose track brackets, a bent rail or a door out of balance. Those are repairs, and we would rather tell you which one it is than sell you a second can of spray.

Questions
Schaumburg questions about this job
Can I do this myself with a can from the hardware store?
The hinges, rollers and spring, yes, provided you buy a garage door lubricant or a white lithium or silicone spray rather than a penetrating oil, and you leave the track dry. The parts to leave alone are the cables, the drums and anything at the bottom brackets, which are all under tension.
How often should a door be lubricated?
Twice a year suits most households, and more often if the garage is the main way in and out. Of the two, the one before winter matters more, because that is when cold and road salt both arrive.
The door is still noisy after lubrication. What now?
That points at wear rather than friction. The usual causes are steel rollers with pitted bearings, hinges worn oval, loose track hardware or a balance problem loading one side. A technician can tell which within a few minutes of watching the door run.
