A steel roller runs on loose ball bearings in an open race. Nothing seals that race, so over years it takes in dust from the slab, grit tracked in on tyres and whatever else lives in a garage. The bearings brinell, the race pits, and the wheel gradually stops rolling and starts skidding along the rail.
Once a wheel skids it wears flat on one side, and the flat spot is what you hear as a rhythmic knock. Meanwhile the stem is galling in the hinge barrel, elongating the hole, letting the roller sit at a slight angle and pushing the whole door out of square in the track.
Nylon or Steel, and Which Belongs on Your Door
Sealed nylon rollers are the usual upgrade. A nylon tyre on a sealed bearing runs quietly against steel track, does not need lubricant on the wheel, and keeps grit out of the race. They are the single most effective change on a noisy door in an attached garage.
There is a caveat. The cheap plastic rollers sold as an upgrade are often worse than the steel they replace, because they use an open bearing or no bearing at all. What matters is a sealed bearing, a full-length stem, and a load rating that suits the door. A heavy insulated three-layer door needs more roller than a single-skin one from the original build-out.
Rollers Rarely Travel Alone
Hinges get replaced alongside them where the barrels have worn oval, because a new roller in a sloppy hinge is still going to wander. Hinges on a sectional door are numbered by position, and putting a number three where a number one belongs is a quiet way to make a door bind.
The top fixture is worth its own look. It carries the top roller on an adjustable arm and sets how firmly the top section seals against the header, and it is the fitting most likely to have been bent by an earlier repair.
