Torsion Springs Measured, Matched and Replaced

A torsion spring is not a generic part off a shelf. It is defined by four things: the wire diameter, the inside diameter of the coil, the wound length, and which way it is wound. All four have to suit the door hanging underneath it. Fit something close but not correct and the door will keep running, badly, until a cable or an opener gear pays for it.

The Four Numbers That Define Your Spring

Wire diameter sets how much torque the spring produces per turn. Inside diameter has to match the cone and the shaft. Wound length, together with wire size, sets the total lift. Insulated Doors on Original Hardware

A common finding in the older Schaumburg subdivisions is a modern insulated steel door hung on spring hardware sized for the single-skin door that came off. Insulated sections are noticeably heavier. The old spring cannot carry the difference, so the door drifts down from waist height, the opener force gets turned up to compensate, and the cables start slapping and eventually jump the drum.

The fix is not more force. It is a correctly specified spring, cables seated properly on the drums, and the opener travel and force reset afterwards so the motor is assisting a balanced door rather than dragging an unbalanced one.

Winding Bars, Cones and Set Screws

The replacement itself is methodical. The door is clamped, the old spring unwound with proper winding bars, the shaft checked for scoring, the end bearing plates and centre bearing inspected, the new spring slid on and the stationary cone fixed. Then the spring is wound to the calculated number of turns, the set screws torqued onto the shaft, and the drums checked so both cables carry equally.

High-cycle springs are worth asking about while the door is open. They use a thicker wire on a larger diameter to reach the same lift with less stress per cycle, which stretches the interval between replacements. On a garage that is the household's main way in and out, that is usually the sensible upgrade.

Is a high-cycle spring worth the upgrade?

If the garage is how everyone comes and goes, yes. A standard spring is engineered for a set number of open-and-close cycles, and a busy household reaches that number far sooner than a house that opens the door at weekends. High-cycle springs are built from heavier wire on a larger coil so each cycle costs the steel less.

My door has only one spring. Should it have two?

Not necessarily. Plenty of narrower doors are correctly specified for a single spring. On a wide two-car door a matched pair distributes the load across the shaft more evenly and keeps lifting the door on one side if the other lets go. The technician will tell you which your door is engineered for.

How can I tell whether my spring was sized correctly to begin with?

Disconnect the opener and lift the door by hand to about waist height. A properly sprung door stays roughly where you put it. If it sinks to the floor the spring is undersized or worn, and if it pulls itself upward it is overwound. Either way it is worth having checked before something else fails.
