The winter reverse, and what it is actually telling you
A door that backs off on the way down is doing exactly what it was built to do. Either the photo-eyes lost sight of one another, or the opener met more resistance than its force setting allows and read that resistance as something underneath the door.
Cold weather makes the second one common in Northwest Indiana. Grease thickens in the rollers and hinges, the bottom seal freezes to a slab that thawed and refroze, and a door that ran sweetly in October now needs more push than the opener is set to give. The answer is to free up the door, not to turn the force setting higher. An opener driven hard against a binding door will find the weakest link in the drive line sooner or later, and that link is usually a gear kit or the trolley.
Photo-eyes, staples and damp splices
The two sensors sit a few inches off the floor either side of the opening, which puts them precisely where a bike pedal, a snowblower handle or a recycling bin lives. A knock of a degree or two is enough to break the beam. The tell is a steady light on one eye and a flickering or dead one on the other.
The wiring matters as much as the aim. In most garages here the sensor wire is stapled along the jamb, and a staple driven a fraction deep will short the pair out months later. Same story with a splice twisted together in a damp corner of an unheated garage. We follow the run and find the break rather than fitting new sensors and hoping.
Where repair stops making sense
Repair is the right answer for sensors and their wiring, remotes and receiver boards, limit and force settings, a stripped gear kit on a chain drive that is otherwise sound, and a snapped trolley or bent rail. Those are parts, and they ride on the truck.
Replacement earns its place when the head unit is old enough to have no photo-eyes at all, when the gear housing has worn the output shaft, or when the same fault keeps coming back after being properly fixed. A newer unit brings a quieter belt drive, rolling-code remotes and a battery backup that still lifts the door when the power drops.
