Torsion Springs on Merrillville's Wide Double Doors
A torsion spring gives almost no warning. There is a bang loud enough that people report it as a gunshot, and after that a door that will not lift at all, or lifts a few inches and stalls while the motor keeps running overhead.

Width is why this hits harder here than in a town of narrow singles. A great many Merrillville ranches were built with one wide double opening rather than two separate doors, and that whole slab of steel hangs off a single shaft above the header. When the counterbalance on a door that wide lets go, nothing else is holding the weight.
Width is what makes these doors hard on a spring
A sixteen-foot door is not simply a bigger version of a nine-foot one. It is heavier, it flexes more across its own span, and the spring set carrying it has to be sized for that load rather than picked off a shelf. Doors of that width usually run a pair, one either side of the center bracket, wound in opposite directions.
Weight also changes over a door's life without anyone noticing. A section gets swapped for an insulated one. A strut goes across the top. Windows are added. Each of those puts on pounds the original spring was never wound for, and the spring runs out of cycles years earlier than the rating suggests.
Four numbers come off the shaft before anything is ordered
Springs are not interchangeable by appearance. Wire diameter, inside diameter, overall length and hand of wind all have to match the door. Get any one of them wrong and you have a door that floats up on its own or sits down hard and drags on the opener every cycle.
On a door already down, the technician measures the broken spring, works the balance from the section count and material, and checks whether the original spec was ever right in the first place. Builder-grade sets in the newer subdivisions are often the bare minimum the door will tolerate, which is why so many of them reach the end of their life in the same tight window.
What happens between the spring going on and the truck leaving
Winding is the short part. Once the new set is on the shaft, the cables are reseated in the drums at equal tension, both set screws are torqued down onto the flats, and the door is disconnected from the opener and lifted by hand.
A correctly balanced door stops and holds wherever you leave it: waist height, shoulder height, halfway. If it creeps up or sinks, the winding is corrected before the motor goes back on. Only then are the opener force and travel settings reset, because those numbers mean nothing on a door that is not balanced.

Questions
Merrillville questions about this job
Only one of my two springs broke. Does the other one have to come off?
Yes. They were wound on the same day and have taken the same number of openings, so the survivor is at the same point in its life. Leaving it means a second failure and a second visit, usually inside a year, and an unbalanced door in the meantime.
How do I tell whether my door has torsion springs at all?
Stand inside and look at the wall above the door. A torsion system is a steel shaft running horizontally across the header with the springs on it, held at a center bracket. If instead you see long springs running back along the ceiling beside each track, that is an extension setup and a different repair.
The opener still lifted the door a few inches after the bang. Can we keep doing that?
No. The springs carry the weight, not the motor. Running an opener against an unbalanced door strips the gear, snaps a cable or drops the door on whatever is underneath. Leave it shut, use the release cord only if a car has to come out, and keep people from under it.
