Skin Damage and Stile Damage Are Different Problems
A dent in the face of a section is cosmetic. Door skin is thin steel and a bumper mark looks worse than it is. What matters sits behind it. Every section has an end stile down each side, and the rollers, the hinges and the lift cables all bolt to those. A bent end stile puts a roller out of line with the track, and straightening the face does nothing about it.
So the inspection is not really about the dent. It is whether the hinges still bed flat, whether the section is square across its width, whether the bottom bracket has been pulled out of position, and whether the sections above absorbed any of the impact. A door that closes but rubs one side afterwards has moved somewhere other than where you are looking.

On a door already at the age where springs and rollers are due anyway, a section swap buys appearance on a system with other bills already queued behind it.
There is a paperwork side as well. Where a vehicle caused the damage, it may sit with an auto policy rather than the house, and a written description of what was damaged and what putting it right involves is something you can have either way. The damage is only in the bottom section. Is that the easy one?
It is the involved one, oddly enough. The lift cables and the bottom brackets both anchor into that section, so the counterbalance has to be unloaded and the door clamped before it can come out, and it goes back in with the cables reset and the door levelled. A middle section is a simpler swap. Neither is a job to attempt with the springs still under load.
Is there any point trying to pull a dent out of the steel?
It can sometimes be improved and it is never a structural repair. Once thin steel has stretched it will not go flat again, and the paint has usually cracked along the crease anyway. Where the dent is shallow, high on the door and the stiles are true, leaving it alone is a legitimate choice. Where a roller no longer runs true, cosmetics are beside the point.
Ours is a wood door on a 1960s garage. Same process?
Different work. Wood doors are usually repaired rather than section-swapped, because nothing off a shelf will match a door built decades ago. The failure is nearly always in the bottom rail, which has stood in water against the slab for decades. That can be cut back and rebuilt, and we say plainly when the rest of the door has gone too far to justify it.
