Dead, Stalled, Spinning or Bouncing
Dead is a power question first. The outlet, whatever it shares a circuit with, the transformer inside the head. Stalling a foot or two up is a different animal: the motor is losing a fight it should never have been in, and what it is fighting is almost always the door rather than itself.
A head that runs its full cycle while the door sits on the floor has lost its grip on the trolley, either a released carriage or a chain off the sprocket. A door that lands and immediately climbs back up is the reverse system doing its job, reporting a genuine obstruction, a photo eye nudged off its aim, or a down limit set so deep that the door meets concrete and reads it as a child.
Two Thin Wires Do More Than People Think
The wall station, the photo eyes and usually the outside keypad all hang off low-voltage wire that was stapled around the garage decades ago. That wire gets pinched by a staple, chafed where it turns a corner, joined with a twist and a wrap of tape, or gnawed. What it produces looks exactly like a dying motor: patchy response, a door that answers the remote but not the button, sensors that sulk only on damp mornings.
Chasing it takes a meter and a bit of patience, and the outcome is a repair, not a new opener. A good number of perfectly sound units get thrown away over eight feet of bad bell wire.
The Bay Nobody Opens
Where a Niles garage has two doors and a motor over each, one of them does all the work and the other gets used a handful of times a year. The quiet one fails in its own way. Everything works from the wall switch and nothing works from a remote.
That puts the fault at the radio end, not the motor. Either the receiver has dropped its codes, which happens after a power event, or the antenna wire has been tidied away or snapped off, or every transmitter has a flat battery, which is less of a coincidence than it sounds when they were all bought at the same time. All three are quick to sort on site.
The light comes on when I press the button but nothing moves.
The board is alive and the command is arriving, so the trouble is mechanical or in the motor itself. On a chain unit the culprit is generally the plastic drive gear, stripped. On a screw unit it tends to be a failed coupler. On either it can be a motor capacitor with no punch left to start it. All three are repairs and the parts are common enough to ride on the van.

It comes off for the duration and goes back onto whatever new framing you end up with, packed so the rail sits true to the door. It is a sensible moment to have the rail height and the door balance checked as well, since the header bracket and the hanging points are both open to view while the ceiling is.
