What Custom Actually Means When You Order a Door

A post-war ranch or split-level presents a long horizontal front with the garage as its dominant feature, and the door has to settle into that rather than announce itself. Long raised panels read heavy on a low elevation. Flat or lightly ribbed sections sit quieter. Carriage-house styling can work on a split-level where the door has enough height to carry it, and looks stuck on where it does not.

Glass is the choice people regret in both directions. A row of lights across the top section brings daylight into a garage with one small window, and on a street of solid doors it makes yours the one people look at. Obscured or frosted glazing lets the daylight in and keeps the view out. On a garage that faces west and takes the full afternoon sun, that detail matters more than it sounds.

An insulated door is sold on R-value and bought for something else. In a garage with uninsulated walls opening straight onto a driveway, the door on its own will not turn the space into a warm room, and that is worth saying before anyone spends on the top of a range. Where it earns its keep is an attached garage under a bedroom, where the door is a large hole in the thermal envelope of the house itself.

The other half of the benefit is mechanical. A double-skin insulated section is far stiffer than a single-skin one, so it flexes less, drums less and runs quieter. It is also heavier, so the springs, the rollers and sometimes the opener get specified around the finished weight.
