What We Deliberately Try to Make Go Wrong
Two independent systems exist to stop a door that is coming down, and each one has to be checked on its own. The photo eyes across the opening stop it before contact, and they get tested by breaking the beam partway through the travel rather than by looking at the little indicator lights. Force reversal stops the door after contact, and that gets tested by laying something solid flat on the slab and letting the door come down onto it. A door that crushes it and carries on has its down-force set past safe.
The manual release gets tested too, which sounds trivial until you count how many have been tied up out of reach or had the cord cut short so it stops catching on a roof rack. Where a spring has broken, pulling that cord is dangerous. Everywhere else it is the way out of a garage in a power cut, and it has to work.
Where the Failures Actually Hide
Cables fray from the inside of the loop at the bottom bracket and where they wrap the drum, and neither of those is visible from the floor. Springs show their age as surface rust between the coils and as a door that has stopped holding itself partway up. Hinges crack around the plate before they tear through. Lag screws in the jamb brackets go soft in timber that has been damp and dried out fifty times.
None of it announces itself. A door can look and sound entirely normal on the morning of the day a cable parts, which is the argument for inspecting a system while it still works.

What is a sensible interval for having a house door checked?
Once a year covers the general case, and sooner in a few situations. After a hard winter, since freeze and thaw work on the seal and the slab and the hardware. Our photo eyes have lights on. Does that mean they are working?

The only real test is breaking the beam with the door coming down and watching what actually happens. That takes a few seconds and it is worth doing yourself between visits.
