Reading the Cables on a Niles Garage Door
Two steel cables carry that door, and hardly anyone looks at them until one lets go. They deserve two minutes of your time, because unlike a spring they give plenty of warning, and the warning is visible from where you are already standing.

Cable work is routine for us throughout Niles, and it is not homeowner work, for one reason. At each bottom corner there is a bracket the cable anchors into, and it carries everything the springs are pulling. People are hurt badly undoing those bolts every year. Nearly everything else on a garage door is fair game. Those two are not.
What to Look For With the Door Fully Up
Run the door all the way up and leave it there. With the weight resting on the horizontal rails the cables are at their slackest and easiest to inspect. Follow each one from the drum on the shaft down to the bottom corner, watching for three things: loose strands lifting away from the lay of the wire, a length that has gone flat, and rust that has moved past surface color into pitting.
The loose strands are what counts. Wire rope frays long before it parts, usually over a matter of weeks, so a cable showing whiskers anywhere along its run is living on borrowed time. Check the far side too. The two were fitted on the same day and they have had identical use.
Garages That Are Half Workshop
Most Niles garages are working buildings. A freezer, shelving, bikes, a bench down one wall, and snow gear that creeps into the door path every December. That matters, because the quickest way to ruin a cable is to stop the door part way down while the opener carries on feeding out line.
The cable goes slack, leaves the groove it should be sitting in, and gets crossed or crushed on the next trip. So we ask what the door has met recently, and we check how the opener's closing force has been set before leaving. A setting wound up until the motor simply shoves through obstructions will produce the same failure again within months.
New Wire Is the Quick Part
Fitting cable takes minutes. Making the door safe beforehand and getting both drums back into agreement afterwards is where the work actually is. The door gets clamped, the springs get unloaded, and the shaft is marked so the two drums finish in the same position relative to one another.
Then the parts around them. Drum grooves, for the wear that put the cable out in the first place. Bottom brackets and the corners they bolt through. The bottom section itself, which is frequently pulled out of shape when a cable goes under load. Cables are fitted as a pair whatever the far side looks like, and the door gets worked by hand several times before the opener is reconnected.

It goes up straight and comes down crooked. Only on the way down.
That points at slack rather than a break. Going up, both cables are pulling and both stay tight. Coming down, one side is paying out faster than the other, which happens when a drum has crept on the shaft or a cable is not seating cleanly. It will not correct itself, and every trip takes a little more out of the wire.
There is a sharp kink in one cable but nothing looks frayed.
A kink is a replacement. Bending wire rope tightly crushes the strands against each other on the inside of the bend, and that damage is done whether or not anything shows from outside. It will part at that point sooner or later. Straightening it out again undoes none of it.
The door stopped on the edge of a shelf and now one cable is loose.
Leave the door where it stands and do not run the opener to see what happens. That loose cable is off its drum or on its way off, and cycling the door is what turns a reseating job into a replacement, and sometimes into a bent bottom section as well. Note roughly how far off the floor it stopped, because that tells us where on the drum to start looking.
