Where the Load Peaks, and What That Tells You
An extension spring works by stretching. With the door flat on the slab the spring is at full extension, holding the entire closed weight of the door, and it relaxes as the door climbs. That geometry is why extension faults announce themselves in the first foot of travel: a jerk as the door breaks free of the floor, a hesitation before it picks up speed, one corner leading the other by an inch.
A door that lifts sweetly off the slab and only complains near the top of the opening is telling you about track, rollers or top brackets instead. Where a door misbehaves is as useful a clue as the noise it makes.
The Half Second After One Lets Go
A spring at full stretch that parts does not simply drop on the floor. It lets go of everything it was holding in one movement and whips the length of the track. In an attached garage that is a car roof, a freezer, a bicycle, whatever happens to be stood along that wall. In a split-level with a bedroom over the garage it is loud enough to bring the whole house downstairs.
Containment is the answer and it is not optional on our jobs. A length of aircraft cable threads through the middle of each spring and fixes at each end, so a spring that parts stays captive on it instead of leaving the wall. Plenty of older doors here never had them, and fitting them is part of the spring job.
Everything on That Side Has Done the Same Work
A spring is only one item in a linked assembly. Riding on its free end is a pulley, with a second fixed at the rear hanger, a cable that leaves the bottom bracket, wraps both pulleys and returns to an anchor point, and a handful of clips and S-hooks holding the arrangement together. All of it is the same age and has taken the same number of cycles as the spring that failed.
That is why both sides are replaced together and matched, and why the surrounding hardware gets renewed where a hook has opened up, a bushing has seized or a pulley has worn a groove in itself. Once it is together the door gets balanced by hand and the opener settings are redone. A one-sided spring job produces a door that climbs crooked and a second call inside a year.

One spring is visibly longer than the other. Has it broken?
No, and it does not have to break to be finished. A spring that has stretched permanently has lost rate, which means it no longer carries its share of the lift. The door starts climbing with one corner ahead of the other and the good side gets overworked carrying the difference. Stretched springs do not recover, so it is a replacement rather than an adjustment.
The springs look sound but the door still lifts unevenly.
Look at the cables next. On an extension system the door is levelled by cable length at the S-hook or clip, and a single hole out of position is visible across a seven-foot opening. A pulley that has crept on its axle or a bottom bracket that has shifted produces the same look. All of it is set under tension, which is why it is a service call rather than a Saturday adjustment.
Is there anything on this system I can safely adjust myself?
Realistically no. The springs are loaded whenever the door is down, so the only position with slack in them is fully open, and even then the door needs clamping in the tracks before anyone puts a hand near the hardware. The bottom brackets stay off the list entirely. If something is rubbing or squealing, cleaning and lubricating is the safe end of what to attempt.
