Most Doors We Tune Up Have Already Been Sprayed

A good share of the doors we tune up have already been lubricated by somebody, and that is not always good news. The aerosol most households keep on a shelf is a water-displacing penetrant, and its actual job is to dissolve and carry off whatever is already there. Aimed at a roller bearing or a spring, it washes away the grease that was doing the work, evaporates, and leaves clean bare steel with nothing on it.

The Right Product on the Right Part

Springs, hinge pins, roller stems and bearings want a product that stays put: white lithium grease, or one of the sprays sold specifically for garage doors that leaves a film once the carrier evaporates. Rubber and plastic want silicone instead, which is why the bottom seal and the weatherstrip round the opening get a different can from the metalwork. An opener chain or screw drive wants a chain lubricant made for the job. There is nothing at all to put on a belt drive.

Quantity is the other half of it. A light film that lands where it was aimed does the job. A soaking runs down the face of the door, drips onto a car roof and collects every bit of dust in the garage, which is how a well-meant job ends up worse than doing nothing.

The Track Is the Part Everyone Sprays and Nobody Should

Rollers roll along the track. They do not slide. Putting grease in the channel reduces no friction because there is no sliding contact there to reduce, and what it does instead is trap grit until the mixture behaves more like a lapping compound than a lubricant. The rollers then skid through it, develop flat spots, and the door ends up louder than it was before anybody touched it.

Track gets cleaned rather than lubricated. A rag run down the inside of the channel, top to bottom, taking off the black paste that builds from old spray and worn roller material. On a door sprayed every spring for a decade, cleaning the track out is on its own a noticeable change.

What Lubrication Will Not Silence

The boundary is worth knowing, because plenty of people spray a door over and over hoping to reach something spray cannot. A squeal or a chirp is dry metal and it does respond. A deep rumble that fills the room is roller bearings that have broken down internally, and no lubricant gets inside a sealed one. One bang at a fixed point in the travel is normally a loose hinge or bracket.

A door that groans as it rises and feels heavy in the hand has a counterbalance problem, and no lubricant does anything for a spring that has given up its tension. A door that catches at exactly the same height every cycle has track or bracket geometry sitting wrong. If the quiet lasted a fortnight after the last spray, the noise was never about lubrication in the first place.

What is a sensible interval between lubrication visits?

Two applications a year covers most doors, and the easiest rhythm to hold onto is one going into winter and one on the way out of it. A door doing dozens of trips a week earns more than that. A door that only moves at weekends needs less. Use the noise as a prompt as well: a squeal returning early usually means the last application went to the wrong places.

What is actually wrong with using WD-40 on a garage door?

It is built to penetrate and to drive off water rather than to lubricate, and it is genuinely good at that job. Freeing a seized hinge pin with it is fine. The mistake is stopping there. Once it has broken something loose, that part needs a proper lubricant applied over it, or you have left a clean dry component that will be squealing again within weeks.

Do sealed nylon rollers still need lubricating?

The wheel itself does not, and the tread should be left alone entirely since anything on it just picks up grit off the track. What does need attention is the stem where it turns inside the hinge sleeve, along with the hinge pins themselves. Those are still metal on metal and they are where most of the squeal on a nylon-roller door comes from.
