Extension Springs and the Hardware Around Them

An extension spring under load is a stretched steel line with nothing containing it. When one parts it releases all that energy at once and whips down the track. A safety cable is a thin cable threaded through the middle of the spring and anchored at both ends, so a failed spring drops on the floor instead of travelling.

If yours does not have them they go in alongside the new springs, and if your springs are still serviceable they can be retrofitted on their own. It is a small part doing the most important job on the assembly.

Extension springs are rated by the door weight they lift, and the pair has to be identical. Putting one new spring opposite a stretched old one throws the door out of balance immediately, drags the leading corner against its track and shortens the life of both springs and both sets of rollers.

With the tension released, the rest of the assembly gets looked at in the same visit: the pulleys at the spring end and the track hanger, the lift cables running through them, and the S-hooks or clips at each anchor. Those parts are inexpensive while the system is apart and awkward to get at once it is back under load.

Where the headroom genuinely allows it, we will tell you whether a torsion conversion is worth doing. On a hard-working door it usually is. On a garage that will never have the clearance, a correctly sized extension pair is not a compromise, it is the right answer.
