Once that grit works into the race the grease becomes an abrasive paste. The wheel stops rolling and starts sliding, and a sliding wheel scrubs the track. Now the track surface is rough, and the rough track works on the next roller. That is the loop that takes a squeak and turns it into a door that jumps.

Damp air off Lake Michigan finishes the stems. Surface rust builds where the stem passes through the hinge sleeve, the stem seizes in place, and the roller can no longer self-centre in the channel. That is the door that binds partway down and bounces back up.

Steel, Nylon and Sealed Bearings

Plain steel rollers came on most older doors. They are hard-wearing, they are loud, and once the race is contaminated they are finished. Nylon wheels on a sealed ball-bearing race are considerably quieter and shrug off grit and salt because the bearing is closed to the outside world.

Fitment is not one-size. Stem length, stem diameter and wheel diameter have to suit the track section on your door. Two-inch wheels on standard residential track covers most Waukegan houses, but heavier doors, low-headroom conversions and commercial track use different hardware. The set that goes on matches what is there rather than what is nearest on the shelf.

The Bottom Two Are Not a DIY Item

The rollers in the bottom brackets sit in a different situation from the rest. The lift cables terminate at those brackets, so the bracket carries the full spring load whenever the door is down. Undoing one without releasing tension first is the classic way people get seriously hurt on a garage door.

Will new rollers fix a door that jumps in the track?

Only if the track is still true. A door that has been running on failed rollers usually has scoring or a spread section in the channel, and that has to be corrected at the same time or the new rollers wear the same way.
