Carriage-house appearance is achieved two entirely different ways and they are not equivalent. A stamped steel section is pressed into a panel profile at the factory, so the shadow lines are shallow and consistent. An overlay door has real trim boards applied to the face, which gives genuine depth and a proper shadow but adds weight, and that weight has to be reflected in the spring specification.

Flush and long-panel sections go the other way: no imposed pattern, which reads correctly on newer houses and anything with clean horizontal lines. It is also the least forgiving of a poor finish, because there is no pattern to break up the surface.

Getting this backwards is the most frequent way an expensive door disappoints. Heavy overlay carriage styling on a plain post-war ranch looks applied rather than original, and flush modern sections on an older frame house look like the garage was replaced separately.

A top row of lites puts daylight into a garage that usually has one small side window, which matters if the space doubles as a workshop. Obscure glazing keeps the light and removes the display of what is parked inside, which is the usual objection to windows on an alley-facing garage.

Decorative hardware divides into handles and hinges that are structural and ones stuck to the face. Both are legitimate; they just should not be confused. Applied hardware is lighter and looks fine at any normal viewing distance. Functional-looking strap hinges add weight, and weight goes back into the spring calculation.

Finish is the last decision and the one with the longest tail. A factory-applied finish on steel is more durable than anything applied on site, but it limits the colour list. Field finishing opens the colour up and puts the upkeep on you.
