The carriage look suits a lot of these garages, but genuine swing-out doors are a poor idea on an alley. They need clear space in front to open, and an alley has refuse containers, a neighbour's car and a passing vehicle in it at any given moment. A pair of doors held open in the wind is also a great deal of leverage on hinges fixed to old framing.

The alternative is an overlay door: a standard sectional that rolls up on track like any other, with stiles, rails and decorative hardware applied to the face so it reads as a swing pair from the alley. Overlays come in solid timber or in composite on a steel base. On an exposed elevation getting weather from every direction, the composite version needs far less attention over its life.

Solid wood overlays, insulation and glass all add weight, and weight is not a cosmetic matter. The counterbalance has to be specified for the finished door rather than for a door of that size, which usually means heavier wire, a longer spring or a pair where there was one. Get it wrong and the door feels fine on the day and eats springs afterwards.

The building has to take it too. A heavy custom door hangs off a header and jambs that were framed for something lighter, so the anchor bracket, the track fixings and the timber behind them all get checked at the measure. The opener is part of the same sum: heavy doors want a stronger operator and a reinforced top section, and where headroom is tight a wall-mounted unit driving the shaft is often the cleaner solution.
