Sizing the Spring to the Door You Actually Have
A spring counterbalances weight, so weight is the starting point. An early steel door, a tongue-and-groove wood door and a modern insulated door can all fill the same opening and pull loads that differ by a wide margin. Where there is any doubt, the honest method is to put a scale under the closed door and read it rather than guess from the look of the sections.
Two more things get measured while the technician is up there. Drum size, because the drum decides how much cable winds per turn and therefore how much travel the spring has to cover, and door height, which sets the spring length. A spring that is correct in wire and diameter but short on length will run out of turns long before the door reaches the top.
Headroom Above the Opening Decides the Hardware
A conventional torsion setup wants roughly a foot of clear space above the opening for the shaft, the drums and the springs. In a fair number of Oak Park alley garages that space is not there. The rafters sit low, sometimes a light or an old junction box is in the way, and the header is deeper than anyone expected.
There are ways around it. Low-clearance track brings the door in tighter to the ceiling, and the torsion assembly can be mounted at the rear on the horizontal angle instead of on the header, with the cables running back to it. Galvanised springs cost more up front and resist that better, which is a reasonable trade in a building like this. Whatever goes on, the anchor bracket it winds against gets checked at the same time. That bracket is lagged into the header, and on framing that has been dry for a century the fixings are only as good as the timber holding them.

How do you work out the size if the spring is already broken?
From the pieces. Wire diameter comes from measuring across a known number of coils and dividing, inside diameter is usually stamped on the cone or measured directly, and the two halves laid together give the original length. Wind direction reads off the coil and the cone colour. If anything is unclear we weigh the door and specify from that instead of copying a spring that may have been wrong to begin with.
What is the bracket in the middle of the header, and why do you check it?
That is the centre anchor bracket. It holds the stationary ends of the springs and carries every bit of torque they produce, so all the load ends up in a handful of lag screws going into the header. On an older garage we look at the timber around them before winding anything up. A bracket working loose in soft or split wood is a failure waiting to happen, and it is far easier to deal with while the door is apart.
Do the bearings and drums need changing along with the spring?
Not always, but they are inspected every time. End bearing plates and the centre bearing wear, and a bearing that has gone rough drags on the shaft and shortens the life of the new spring. Drums get looked at for a worn cable groove and a set screw that has chewed the shaft. If they are sound they stay. If they are not, changing them while everything is unwound costs far less disruption than doing it later.
