The cable loops around a fitting at the bottom bracket and that is where it dies. A snapped cable has actually parted, the door has dropped on one side, and the spring tension has redistributed in a way that must be released before anything is unbolted.
Either way, the door gets blocked and the tension bled off first. Undoing a bottom bracket with a live spring above it is the classic way people get hurt in a garage, and it is entirely avoidable.

Cables are replaced as a pair. They were made to the same length, they aged in the same damp, and a fresh cable working against a tired one pulls the door out of square inside a few weeks.
