Three Safety Tests You Can Run on Your Door Today
You can check most of what matters yourself in about five minutes, and it is worth doing before you call anyone. Run these three.

One: with the door open, lay a length of two-by-four flat on the floor in the door's path and close it. The door should touch the wood and reverse. Two: with the door closing, wave a broom handle through the beam between the two sensors near the floor. It should stop and go back up. Three: pull the release cord, lift the door by hand to waist height and let go. It should stay put.
What Those Three Tests Are Really Checking
The first is mechanical reversal, governed by the opener's down-force setting. If the door pushes on and crushes the wood, the force is set too high, and that same setting will not distinguish between a board and a person. The second is the photo-eye circuit, required on openers manufactured since the early nineties. The third is spring balance.
If any of the three fail, stop using the opener until it is corrected. None of them are difficult fixes on their own. All three failing together usually means the opener is old enough to be past economic repair.
What Keeps Turning Up on Skokie's Older Doors

Is an inspection worth it if the door works perfectly?
