A stretched extension spring stores its energy in a straight line, and when it breaks the loose half travels along that line. A containment cable is a plain steel cable threaded through the middle of the spring and anchored at both ends, so a break drops the pieces onto the cable instead of sending them across the garage. If nothing runs through the centre of your springs, that cable is missing.
