What Breaks on the Shaft Above a Romeoville Door

Above the door sits a steel shaft carrying a cable drum at each end, resting in a bearing plate at each side and usually a centre bearing lagged into the header. One Spring or Two Above a Sixteen-Foot Door

Most of the double bays that went up through the subdivision years carry a pair of springs on one shaft, each doing half the work. A single door usually carries one. Neither arrangement is a rule, and wide builder doors turn up running a single heavy spring where a pair would have been the better call. It works. It simply uses up its cycles faster and leaves nothing at all holding the door when it lets go.

When one of a pair breaks, both get replaced. They were wound on the same afternoon and have made exactly the same number of trips, so the survivor is not a good spring, it is the next one. Hanging a new spring beside a tired one also puts the door out of balance, and the opener ends up paying for that.

Bearings, Drums and the Header They Hang From

End bearing plates are pressed steel with a small race inside. They stay quiet for years, and when they finally run dry they squeal on the way up and start scoring the shaft. The centre bearing carries the heaviest load of the three and is lagged straight into the timber header above the opening, which on a fast production install can mean short lags in wood that has since dried and shrunk.

Cable drums sit on each end of the shaft with the lift cable wound into a spiral groove. If a cable has ever jumped that groove, the drum has a flat or a burr in it and the new cable will find the same spot again. All of this is invisible under tension and obvious the moment the tension is gone.

Winding Is Torque, Not Muscle

A replacement spring goes on loose and is then wound in quarter turns with steel bars, to a count worked out from the door height rather than by feel. Set screws bite onto the shaft hard enough to hold and not so hard they gall it. Cables get seated, drums squared, and only then does the door get tested by hand with the opener disconnected.

A correctly wound door will sit still halfway up with nothing holding it. If it sinks or climbs, the wind is wrong and gets corrected before anything is reconnected. That hand check is the last step on every spring job we do.

The door lifts about a foot, stops and drops back. Spring or opener?

Usually the spring. With the counterbalance gone the motor is trying to drag the entire weight of the door and its overload cuts in almost straight away. Pull the release cord and try lifting by hand. If it feels like lifting a fridge, the motor was never the problem.

Both can be correct. What matters is that the total torque matches the weight and height of the door. We measure the door and the existing spring before ordering, and if a single spring has been undersized for what it has been carrying, we will say so.

Is there anything else worth doing while the springs are off?

The parts that are only reachable with the tension released: end bearings, the centre bearing, the condition of the cables where they wind onto the drums, and the bottom brackets. None of it is compulsory. It is just the one visit where those parts are actually accessible.
