What the Photo-Eyes Cannot See on a Romeoville Door

It does not see a hand resting on the bottom section, a bicycle wheel leaning under the door, or a dog lying against the jamb outside the beam. The other is contact reversal: the door meets resistance on the way down and backs off. It is adjustable, it drifts, and on plenty of doors around here it has been deliberately wound up to force a heavy door shut. An inspection tests both, then looks hard at the hardware that would have to hold if either one let you down.
Two Tests, and They Are Not the Same Test
Waving a hand through the beam tells you the sensors are alive. It tells you nothing whatsoever about the down force. For that the door has to be closed onto something solid and low, a length of timber laid flat under the middle of the opening, and it should reverse promptly on contact rather than pressing on and thinking about it.
If the door fails that second test, the answer is almost never to adjust the force and move on. A door needing a lot of push to close is reporting a balance problem, and turning the force up is the mechanism working around a fault instead of telling you about it.
The Parts That Would Have to Hold
Bottom brackets carry the lift cables and sit under full spring tension the entire time the door is down. On builder doors twenty-odd years in, the lag holes behind them have frequently opened up. Cables fray where they wind onto the drum, out of sight from the floor. Single-piece hinges crack at the knuckle. None of it shows in normal use, which is the point.
Springs get a look and a straight answer about what stage of life they are at. Nobody can date a spring precisely, but wear at the coils, evidence of previous repairs and the door's own history usually give a fair picture of whether it is near the end of its cycles.

Rarely a fault. More often something has changed: a house bought or sold, a tenant moving in, a child now tall enough to reach the wall button, or a garage that has quietly become the room where the freezer and the bikes live, with traffic through it all day.

That is usually low sun blinding the receiving eye rather than a fault inside it. Shielding or repositioning the sensor fixes it. It is worth ruling out a genuinely knocked bracket at the same time, since from the doorway the two look identical.
