A lot of Wilmette garages have a bedroom, an office or a family room directly overhead, which turns opener noise from an annoyance into the whole reason for the call. Doors that reverse before landing, or stop a foot short on the way up, usually come down to three things: photo eyes knocked out of alignment, travel limits that have wandered, or force settings wound up to paper over a heavy door.
That last one is worth being blunt about. Down force is a safety setting, not a strength dial. Turn it far enough and the door will no longer stop for a bumper, a bicycle or a shoulder. If an opener needs high force just to move the door, the problem lives in the springs, and adjusting the screw only postpones the day the gear strips.
Repair, Retrofit or Start Again
Plenty of units are worth keeping. Drive gears, sprockets, capacitors, travel modules, receivers that have stopped hearing the remotes and wall stations on tired old wire are all routine parts work, and the common items ride on the van.
Replacing outright is the honest answer when there are no photo eyes down at floor level, when the control board has died and nobody makes it any more, or when a light door has been swapped for a heavy insulated one and the motor was never rated for what it now lifts. Mention early on if you want phone control or an outside keypad, because that shapes which direction is sensible.

The motor whirrs but nothing happens to the door.
Either the carriage has come away from the trolley, or the gear inside the head has chewed itself out and the shaft is spinning with nothing to grip. Check the release cord first, since a pulled release does exactly this. If that is not it, stop running the unit, because a damaged gear only gets worse.
The remotes are fine but the outside keypad has stopped working.
Usually the battery, a worn keypad membrane after years of weather, or a code that has dropped out of the receiver's memory. It is a quick diagnosis and rarely means anything is wrong with the opener itself.
We fitted a much heavier door. Do we just need a stronger motor?
Not on its own. A correctly balanced heavy door barely asks more of the motor than a light one, because the springs are doing the lifting. We check the balance first, then talk about whether the unit is genuinely underrated for the door.
