Doors Drawn for Wilmette Houses Older Than the Two-Car Garage
A good number of the garages in Wilmette were built for cars that were narrower and shorter than what is parked in them today. Some have been widened. Some have had a header replaced. Some have simply had a larger opening cut into a building that was framed for a single. The result is a village full of openings that are not standard sizes.

A door built to the measured opening solves that outright. It also means deciding what the door should look like, rather than picking the least wrong option from a rack of stock widths.
Measure First, Design Second
Nothing gets drawn until the opening, the headroom, the sideroom, the backroom and the condition of the jambs have been recorded on site. On an older detached garage those numbers are seldom what a catalogue assumes, and they set real limits: how tall the sections can be, whether low-headroom hardware is required, and how heavy the finished door is allowed to get before the framing needs attention first.
That visit is also when the header and the jamb legs get judged. A custom door is a serious weight to hang on timber that has spent eighty years carrying something lighter, and finding a soft header at the design stage is far better than finding it on installation day.
Proportion Does More Work Than Styling Does
Carriage, flush, raised panel, contemporary glazed. The style names get all the attention while the proportions do most of the work. A wide opening split into four short sections reads completely differently from the same opening in three tall ones, and on a house with a strong horizontal line the wrong division argues with the elevation.
Glazing behaves the same way. Glass in the top section is the safe default; glass in the second section down changes the whole face and suits some houses badly. Hardware should look like it is holding something together rather than stuck on afterwards. These get worked out against photographs of your actual house, in daylight, not against a showroom wall.
From Drawing to Specification
What comes out of the design stage is an elevation drawing, a section layout, a glass and hardware schedule, the finish, the insulation construction and the material. Real timber gives you the genuine article and a refinishing cycle, shorter on a drive that takes afternoon sun. Steel with an overlay and a factory finish gives you the look with a much longer interval before it wants attention.
The specification then drives the mechanical half. The finished weight sets the spring, the cable gauge, the track gauge and the hangers, which is exactly the step skipped when a heavy door gets ordered and hung on standard parts. If your property is subject to any association or local review, the drawing and specification sheet are what you submit.

Questions
Wilmette questions about this job
Our garage opening is not square. Does that rule a custom door out?
No, it is one of the better reasons to have one made. The door is built to the measurement rather than picked off a shelf. Out-of-square openings are ordinary on buildings this age, and what we assess is whether the frame wants squaring first or can simply be trimmed to.
How long does the whole process take?
Longer than a stock door, and honestly so. Design takes as long as you want it to. After the order, custom widths, timber, glazing packages and matched finishes run in weeks rather than days, and you get the lead time in writing before anything is committed.
Real wood, or steel that looks like wood?
It comes down to how you feel about upkeep. Timber has a depth no overlay quite reproduces and it wants refinishing on a cycle. Clad steel holds its finish for years, weighs less, and is easier on the springs and opener. Both sit well on the houses here.
