The Cable Nobody Notices Until It Is Missing

A stretched extension spring is a loaded steel coil held in place by nothing except the hardware at each end. When it snaps, both halves are free and they travel. The answer is a containment cable, a length of aircraft cable threaded through the middle of the spring and anchored at both ends, so a failure drops the spring on the floor rather than launching it across the garage.

It ought to be standard. On the buildings we work in around here it frequently is not, either because the door predates the practice or because somebody replaced a spring years ago and left the cable out. It is the first thing we look for, and it goes back in on every extension job we do.

Pulleys, Forks and the Slack You Cannot See

Extension springs pull through a pulley at the spring end and another at the track bracket. Those pulleys run on bearings, and in an unheated garage bearings seize. A sheave that has stopped turning means the cable saws across a stationary groove until it frays, a strand lets go, and the door starts climbing crooked.

The quieter failure is the spring losing its temper. One that has been overstretched never returns to its original length, so it sits with the coils apart at rest and gives back less than it should. The door feels heavy in the hand, the opener leans on it harder, and nothing looks broken at all.

Matched Pairs, or a Conversion

Extension springs are specified by the weight they lift and the distance they travel, and manufacturers mark the ends with a colour to indicate the weight class. Both sides have to match. A door running one new spring against a twenty-year-old one pulls unevenly on every cycle and slowly racks itself in the track.

Where the headroom exists, converting a heavier door to torsion is often the better outcome, because torsion balances a wide door more evenly and fails less dramatically. Where the headroom is not there, matched extension springs with containment cables are a thoroughly sound system, and we will say so instead of selling you the conversion.

It is the manufacturer's weight code, telling you what that spring is rated to lift. We use it as the starting point when replacing, then confirm against the actual door, because doors gain weight over the years through repainting, added insulation and struts.

One spring has snapped. Can we lift the door by hand until you get here?

We would rather you did not. With one side gone the door pulls hard on one corner and can twist in the track or come out of it. If a car genuinely has to come out, call first and we will talk through whether it is safe to try.

Our garage has almost no room above the opening. Are we stuck with what we have?
