Once one has parted, stop using the door. It is hanging off one side, the spring above is now loaded unevenly, and every cycle from that point drags the whole assembly further out of square.

A Cable Almost Never Fails on Its Own

By the time the wire lets go, something else has usually been wrong for months. A door that hangs a little out of square dumps its weight onto one corner at the bottom of travel. A drum with a loose set screw lets the wrap creep so the cable saws against the flange. A bottom seal that has been catching on a heaved slab shock-loads both sides every morning it gets forced.

So the repair starts with the cause. Fitting new wire and leaving the reason in place gives you the same call again next winter, and on a heavy door the second failure normally brings a damaged bottom section with it.

Gauge, Drums and the Weight They Are Carrying

Cable comes in gauges and drums come in sizes, and neither is a generic part. A wide insulated door needs heavier wire than a light single. A door on high-lift track needs drums grooved for the extra travel it makes.

Fit whatever happens to be in the box and the wire starts stacking on itself at the drum, the door climbs crooked, and a few weeks later it hops the track. The specification gets checked against the door in front of us before anything is cut.

Getting It Back Under Control Safely

The door is clamped in the track and the spring tension is dealt with before a single bolt at the bottom bracket is touched. That fitting is the one point in a garage where a live spring, a loaded cable and a pair of hands all meet, which is exactly why it is a poor candidate for a stepladder and a pair of pliers.

Replacement wire goes on in twos. The drums are then indexed so each side takes an identical number of turns, and the door is walked up slowly with the top edge checked for level. The last job is to disconnect the opener and test the balance, since a tired spring is a common reason cables die young and it would take the new ones the same way.

The door goes up crooked but nothing looks broken to me.

That is usually slack on one side, a wrap that has slipped on the drum, or a set screw that has backed off. Nothing has to have snapped for the door to be unsafe. Left running, a crooked door works its way off the track.

Can we keep using the door carefully until you get here?

Better not. Each cycle on a failed cable puts more load through the good side and pulls the door further out of square. If you need a vehicle out of there, ring us first rather than improvising, since a door in that condition can come down without warning.

Is there a schedule for replacing cables, like there is for a car?

Not really. Cables get inspected at every service and swapped when the strands show wear or corrosion at the ends. On a heavy door having springs done, it is usually sensible to change the wire in the same visit, because both have logged exactly the same work.
