Replacing One Section Without Making the Door Look Patched

The question is almost never whether a section can be swapped. It can. The question is whether the new one will look like it belongs afterwards, and that depends on how old the door is and how much afternoon sun that driveway gets.

Northbrook doors span a wide spread of ages. Anything from a recent rebuild can usually be matched out of the manufacturer's current line. A door from the seventies or eighties may be out of production entirely, and then matching means finding a compatible profile and dealing with the color difference honestly rather than hoping nobody looks twice.

Which Section Took the Hit Changes the Job

The bottom section is not simply the one a bumper can reach. It carries the bottom brackets, and the bottom brackets are where the lift cables terminate under full spring tension. A damaged bottom section is a loaded part, and it is not something to leave hanging while you decide.

A middle section is structurally quieter. The top section carries the top fixtures, and on wider doors it also carries the strut that stops the door bowing across the opening. Whatever comes out, the hardware on it gets transferred or renewed rather than unbolted and put straight back.

Matching a Door That Is No Longer Made

Sections are identified by embossment pattern, panel layout, thickness and the manufacturer's own rail profile. Short panel, long panel, flush and ribbed are not interchangeable, even between doors that look near enough identical from the street.

Where the exact section has gone out of production we will tell you. Sometimes the right answer is a compatible section finished to match. Sometimes, particularly where two or three sections are damaged or the rest of the door is already tired, the sensible answer is a new door, and we would rather say that at the estimate than after a section has been ordered.

Townhome Rows and Keeping a Run Consistent

Northbrook has a good deal of attached and townhome property where the doors went in as a run and the association expects them to stay looking like one. That narrows the options, and it is worth knowing before anything gets ordered rather than after it arrives.

If a color or a profile needs sign-off we will give you the specification in writing so you have something to submit. It is a small step, and it stops a job stalling halfway through for want of a piece of paper.

Questions

Northbrook questions about this job

One panel is dented but the door still works. Does it need doing at all?

If it is cosmetic and the steel is not creased through, it can wait. What changes the answer is a crease that has broken the skin, because water then gets behind the finish and the section starts rusting from the inside out.

Can a dent be pulled rather than replacing the whole section?

Sometimes, on a shallow dent in a flat area. Steel with an embossed woodgrain finish does not come back cleanly, and a pulled dent in a ribbed section often looks worse than the dent did.

A car went into the door. What should be checked before we decide anything?

The track and rollers on that side, the bottom bracket if the impact was low, and whether the door still runs its full travel by hand with the opener disconnected. Impact damage is usually wider than the part you can see.
