Designing a Door the Hardware Can Actually Carry
Start with the glass, because it is the choice that changes the most behind the scenes. A full-view aluminum and glass door on a modern Northbrook rebuild can weigh two or three times what a builder's steel door weighed, and every pound of it lands on the springs, the shaft, the bearings and the header above the opening.

None of that is an argument against it. It is an argument for specifying the hardware alongside the design instead of after it, which is exactly the step that gets skipped when a door is chosen from a brochure and priced as a like-for-like swap.
Materials, and What Each One Asks of You Later
Real wood, usually cedar or hemlock over a steel or composite backing, gives a depth of grain nothing else matches. It also moves with humidity and wants refinishing on a schedule, sooner on a west-facing driveway with no mature tree cover over it.
Clad and composite carriage doors get most of that look for a fraction of the upkeep. Aluminum full-view suits the flat-roofed modern elevations that have appeared on Northbrook teardown lots. Insulated steel with an applied overlay is the pragmatic middle ground, and there is no shame in choosing it.
Openings the Standard Catalog Does Not Answer
Rebuilt Northbrook garages throw up sizes stock doors were never drawn for. Wider single openings, three bays under one roofline, taller openings to clear a truck or a car lift, and headroom that varies because the room above was framed to suit the house rather than the door.
Where ceiling height allows it, running the door further up the wall before it turns horizontal buys back usable ceiling and looks cleaner from inside. It changes the track geometry and generally points towards a wall-mounted operator. All of that gets worked out at the measure, not discovered on install day.
From Elevation Drawing to Fitted Door
Where there is an architect's elevation we work to it. Where there is not, we measure the opening, look at the house from the street and again from the driveway, and put options together showing window layout, panel style, color and hardware before anything is ordered.
Lead times on custom work are real and they vary by material and finish far more than by size. You get the honest figure at the point you commit. If the existing door is unsafe in the meantime, it gets made safe rather than left to wait for the new one.

Questions
Northbrook questions about this job
How much heavier is a full-view glass door than the steel one we have?
Enough that the spring system, often the shaft, and frequently the opener all change with it. We calculate or weigh it as part of the specification rather than estimating, because the entire balance of the door depends on that number being right.
Do custom doors need a different opener?
Frequently. Weight is one reason. Geometry is the other: a door running higher up the wall, or a garage where the ceiling is being used for storage, usually points to a wall-mounted unit on the torsion shaft instead of a rail down the center. That gets decided with the door, not afterwards.
Can a custom door be matched to woodwork elsewhere on the house?
Stains match closely on real wood and reasonably well on woodgrain composites. Exact matching between two different materials that will weather at different rates is not realistic, and we would rather show you samples on the driveway than promise it.
