Cold Garages, Stiff Grease and the Wrong Can

What Goes Where, and What Gets Nothing
Hinges, roller stems and bearings, spring coils, end bearings and the torsion shaft all take a proper garage door lubricant, either a lithium-based grease or a decent silicone spray. It goes onto the moving contact points, applied deliberately, not misted at the whole door from six feet back.
The track gets nothing. A greased track collects grit and turns into an abrasive paste, and the rollers are meant to roll along it rather than slide. Tracks get wiped clean instead. Nylon roller wheel faces get nothing either. The bearing in the center of the wheel does; the surface that touches the track does not.
Why the Household Spray Makes It Worse
The common blue-and-yellow can is a solvent and a water displacer, and it does exactly what it says on the label. Sprayed into a hinge it dissolves whatever grease was in there and leaves a thin film behind that evaporates. The door goes quiet for a week and ends up drier than it started.
The same applies to thin household oils that run. What a garage door wants is something that stays where it was put through a whole Chicago-area winter, not something that has migrated onto the floor by Thanksgiving and left the pivot bare.
Where the Salt and Grit Come From
