Cables are the link between the counterbalance above the opening and the bottom corners of the door, and they carry that load down each side. Nothing else in the system does that job, which is why they get looked at first when a door starts moving unevenly.

Slack Is the Warning. The Break Comes Later.

Slack turns up for a handful of reasons. The door came down on an obstruction. A recycling bin left in the wrong spot, a bike, a ridge of frozen slush across the threshold. The drum kept turning while the cable stopped being pulled. A spring has lost tension and is no longer holding the door up against the drums. Or the two drums were never set to the same wind in the first place.

Whatever caused it, the cable leaves its groove, wraps back over itself and gets crushed between its own turns. That crushing is what finishes it. Strands flatten, then part one at a time, and it usually goes on an ordinary lift some weeks later with nobody expecting it.

Wide Doors and High-Lift Change the Drum

A cable is not just wire cut to length. It is matched to the drum, and the drum is matched to door height and the type of lift. Standard lift, low headroom and high lift all use different drums with different groove profiles, and the taller Northbrook garages built with overhead storage or a lift in mind frequently run high lift.

Get that pairing wrong and the cable rides the wrong part of the drum, wears quickly and lets the door sit out of level. On a wide door the error shows immediately, because a small difference in wind across a sixteen or eighteen foot span puts a visible tilt on the bottom rail and lets weather under one end.

What the Failed Cable Took With It

By the time a cable parts, other parts have usually taken a share of it. We check the bottom brackets, which sit under full tension and corrode upward from the slab. We check the roller and the track flange on the side that dropped, because a door landing at an angle digs in. And we check the top section for twist.

The springs get a look too. Corrosion and a failed spring are two completely separate stories that finish with the same parted cable, and the repair only holds if we know which one this was. New cables then go on in pairs, both drums are set to an identical wind, the door is lifted by hand to confirm it holds its own weight, and it gets cycled end to end a few times before we leave.

We are having new springs fitted. Do the cables get replaced at the same time?

Not automatically, but they get properly inspected once the tension is off, and that is the one point in the job when inspecting them is easy. If they are the same age as the springs that just failed and show flattening or a broken strand, doing them then costs far less in labour than a separate visit later.

Our door is eighteen feet wide. Does that make it a bigger job?

Slightly, and mostly in the setting up. Longer cables, larger drums and more span mean the two sides have to be matched more precisely, and a wide door is less forgiving of being a fraction out. The method is the same, it just takes longer to get right.
