Can our existing opener be made smart instead of replaced?
Often yes. Add-on controllers work with a lot of units made in the last fifteen years, provided the opener has a compatible safety sensor arrangement. If the motor is already tired, though, spending on an add-on is money going into the wrong part.
Would a wall-mount opener work on our door?
It needs a torsion spring system on a shaft, enough side room beside the opening and a door in decent balance. It will not work on an extension spring setup unless the springs are converted first.
The app says closed but the door is open a couple of inches. What is that?
The tilt sensor reports the door's position, not the opener's limit setting. If the down limit has drifted the door stops short while the sensor still reads closed. It is a limit adjustment, and worth doing, because a door short of the floor is not locked.
