The sound tells you what has gone. A steady rumble is bearings. A rhythmic click, once per wheel revolution, is a flat spot. A scrape that happens at one point in the travel and nowhere else is a wheel touching the track rather than rolling in it.
Steel Rollers and the Bearings Inside Them
The basic roller is a steel wheel on an open bearing race, ten or eleven loose balls with no seal over them. Driveway grit, dust and the salt that comes in on tires all reach that race. Once it is pitted the wheel stops turning freely and starts skidding along the track instead of rolling.
A skidding roller does two things badly at once. It makes noise, and it loads the track sideways every time the door changes direction. Left long enough it wears the lip of the track and the door starts riding rough through the curve.
What Actually Makes the Swap Quiet
Nylon gets the credit, but the bearing does most of the work. A sealed double race inside a nylon wheel is quiet because no metal is touching the track and no grit is reaching the balls. A nylon wheel on an open bearing is only marginally better than the steel one it replaced.
Stem length matters as well. Short-stem and long-stem sets are not interchangeable, and a stem too short for the bracket lets the wheel wander in the track. We match the stem to the hinges and the track spacing already on your door rather than fitting whatever is standard.
The Top Roller Nobody Checks
The roller in the top bracket absorbs the whole angle change as the door tips over into the horizontal. It also sits where nobody looks. On a door that runs fine until the last foot of opening, that roller and the fixture holding it are the first place to check.
While the door is down we go through the hinges too. A worn hinge holds its roller at a slight angle, and a brand new roller in a sloppy hinge will be sounding old again inside a year. Numbered hinges also have to go back in the right positions up the door.

Do all the rollers get replaced, or only the noisy ones?
All of them. They have run the same number of openings, and mixing new with worn spreads the load unevenly across the door. A full set also makes the difference in noise obvious instead of marginal.
The door is quiet going up and loud coming down. Why the difference?
On the way down the door is being lowered against the springs and the load path through the rollers changes. Noise only on the descent tends to point at the track curve or the hinges rather than at the rollers themselves.
There is a bedroom over our garage and the noise carries. Will new rollers fix that?
They deal with the rolling noise. Vibration from the opener travelling through the ceiling joists is a separate problem, handled with rubber isolators at the rail hanger and, where it is bad enough, a different drive type.
