Before anything new is wound we look at the centre bracket and its bearing, both end bearing plates, both drums and both cables. A cable that has been whipped, or a drum with a scored groove, will take the new springs down with it.
Setting them is the part that decides how long they last. Springs get wound to the door we are standing under, not to a figure off a chart, and the test is simple. Released from the opener, the door should sit still at waist height and lift with one hand. After that the opener force and travel limits are reset to the new balance and the safety reverse is tested.

The doors went in during the rebuild but the springs above them look original. Can that be right?
More often than anyone would like. Where a new door goes onto an existing shaft, the previous springs sometimes stay exactly where they are, because the door still moves. It will keep moving, right up until it does not. A door that gained insulation, glass or a wood face weighs more than the spring was wound for, and the opener has been paying that difference ever since.
Can you tell how much life is left in a spring that has not broken yet?
Not to the month, but it can be read. Coils that have spread apart, surface flaking, a door that has started needing a shove at the bottom, and a balance test that comes up short all point the same way. We tell you what we see and leave the decision to you.
If I stop the door halfway it drifts down on its own. Is that a spring problem?
Usually. A door in balance holds whatever position you park it in. Drifting means the springs are no longer carrying the full weight, either because they have lost tension or because the door is heavier than they were sized for. Better dealt with before it becomes a break.
