Split-levels dominate large stretches of the village, and their garages usually sit beneath living space with the joists running close over the opening. That frequently leaves less clearance above the header than standard hardware wants. Where a shaft cannot be mounted conventionally, the answer is low-headroom gear or a rear-mounted arrangement, not forcing a standard kit into a space that was never going to take it.

A number of original doors in that same stock still use the older extension-spring layout, a long spring down each side anchored back along the ceiling instead of a wound shaft across the header. Each of those wants a safety cable running down the bore of the spring, present purely to catch one that lets go. They go missing during budget repairs more often than they should, and they go back on with the new set.

Four properties of the old spring decide what replaces it: wire thickness, coil diameter, the length of the wound section, and which way it turns. Get any one wrong and you finish with a door that either creeps up off the slab or comes down harder than it should. Where the original is unreadable, or the door has been altered since it was fitted, we weigh the door and work back from that figure instead.

Doors carrying a pair get both sides done together, because the survivor has performed identical work and is not far behind. Drums are then re-indexed, tension evened across both cables, and the door tested by hand at mid-travel with the motor unhooked. It should sit where it is put. Reverse-on-contact and the shaft bearings finish the visit.
