Designing a Door That Suits the House It Goes On
Custom rarely means built from nothing. In practice it means choosing the panel profile, the material, the glass, the colour and the hardware, then having the door made to the opening you actually have rather than the nearest standard size. That covers almost everything people want, and it keeps the door serviceable with parts that exist.

The custom work we design in Tinley Park falls into two groups: front-facing bays on the larger two-storey houses in the newer subdivisions, and older ranches where the owner is finally replacing a door that never suited the elevation.
Reading the house before choosing the door
The door is normally the largest single surface on the front of the house, which is why a mismatch is so visible from the street. The brick sets the palette. The shape of the windows sets whether glass belongs in the door at all and what pattern it should follow. Roof pitch and the depth of the eaves decide whether a raised panel or a flush face sits better under them.
Carriage-house styling is the most requested look and it comes two ways. A stamped or overlaid sectional door gives the appearance while still rolling up overhead, which is what nearly everybody actually wants. True swing-out doors need side clearance and a different operator entirely, and on most driveways here they are not practical.
What a heavier door demands from everything else
A door with a solid overlay, thick insulation or a lot of glass can weigh well beyond what the opening was originally set up for. That is not a problem, but it is not free either. Spring gauge and cycle rating are calculated against the finished weight, the track may step up in gauge, and heavier hinges and rollers go on with it.
The operator matters too. Past a certain weight a ceiling trolley unit is working at its limit, and a wall-mounted jackshaft becomes the right answer, taking the drive to the torsion shaft where the leverage already is. The whole assembly is specified against the door, not the other way round.
Glass, insulation and the room over the garage
Glass is the decision people go back and forth on most. Full-view aluminium and glass looks superb on the right elevation and gives up insulation to do it. Obscured or frosted glazing keeps the daylight without putting the garage on display. Where there is finished living space above the garage we usually push the balance toward insulation and keep the glass to the top section.
Finishes hold up better than they used to. Factory-coated steel stays true far longer than a site-painted door, and woodgrain finishes on steel or composite give you the look of timber without the upkeep a real wood door on a west-facing elevation asks for every year.

Questions
Tinley Park questions about this job
Does a custom door take much longer to arrive than a stock one?
Yes, and how much longer depends on the maker, the finish and the time of year. The lead time goes in writing with the quote so it can be planned around, and your existing door keeps working in the meantime unless it is already broken.
Our subdivision has rules about the front elevation. Does that rule custom out?
Not usually. It narrows the choices of panel style, colour and glass to what fits alongside the rest of the row. Send us the association's guidance before we design rather than after, and the whole thing goes smoothly.
Can two doors of different widths on one house still match?
That is routine. A double and a single beside it get ordered together in the same profile, colour and glass pattern, with the window layout scaled to each width so the pair reads as one design rather than two separate decisions.
