Springs are rated in cycles, one cycle being a full open and a full close. A standard set is rated around 10,000. That sounds enormous until you count what a Wheaton household actually does with it. What Happens on the Visit
The technician measures the existing spring first: wire size, inside diameter, length and wind direction. They were wound together, they have carried the same load, and leaving the survivor in place buys you a second call before long.
After the swap the door is balanced by hand with the opener disconnected. It should hold roughly halfway on its own. We then reset the opener travel and force, look over the cables and drums while everything is accessible, and run the door through a full cycle before packing up.

Usually, yes. With a broken spring the opener is trying to lift the entire weight of the door on its own, and most units give up within a few inches. Stop using it. Every extra press risks stripping the drive gear or pulling a cable off its drum.
Can I lift the door by hand until you get here?
We would rather you did not. A double door with no working counterbalance can weigh well over two hundred pounds and nothing is holding it once it is moving. If a car is shut in, say so when you book and we will treat it as an emergency call.
