The other recurring find is soft wood. Old fir jambs have carried lag bolts for decades, and an end bearing plate that has worked loose chews the timber rather than holding torque. If the anchor points are no good the spring will not stay in adjustment, so the framing gets dealt with first.
How the Replacement Actually Goes
The spring is measured before anything is ordered: wire diameter, inside diameter, overall length and wind direction. Guess any of the four and you get a door that runs heavy or floats, and both wear the opener out.
Old spring off the tube, new one on, cables reset in the drums, then wound with bars to the turn count the door height calls for. The last step matters most: we lift the door by hand to waist height and let go, and a balanced door stays put.

My door has one torsion spring. Should the replacement also be a single?
