South Holland, IL · Same-day service
A Door That Will Not Close, and What to Do Tonight
There are two versions of this call and they need different answers. A door stuck down traps a car and a schedule. A door stuck open leaves an attached garage, and often the house behind it, open to the street and to the weather. The second one is the one people put off, and it is the one that should not wait.

South Holland sits on our south-suburban run with Calumet City, Lansing, Dolton and Thornton, so urgent calls get pulled to the front of the day rather than added to the end of the week.
Stuck open, and why that is the urgent one
An attached ranch garage usually holds the water heater, the laundry, or a line running to the kitchen. Leaving that space open to outside air through a January night is how people find a burst pipe in the morning. A door that will not come down turns a nuisance into a deadline.
There is the obvious side of it too. On an attached house the inner door to the hall is often the lightest lock on the property, and a garage standing open overnight puts it on show. That is a call worth making today rather than tomorrow.
The red cord, and when pulling it makes things worse
The release handle disconnects the door from the opener. Pulled with the door down, it lets you lift by hand, which is exactly what it is for. Pulled with the door up and a spring or cable broken, it removes the only thing holding a very heavy door in the air. If the door is up and something has snapped, leave the cord alone and keep everyone out from underneath.
The same applies to a door jammed part way. It is being held by friction, not by balance. Prop nothing under it, park nothing under it, and if a car is sitting in the opening, leave it where it is until somebody with the right tools has hold of the door.
Parts that travel with us, and parts that have to be ordered
Broken springs, snapped cables, doors off their track, dead openers and jammed sections are all normal same-visit work, because the van carries springs, cables, rollers, hinges and the common opener parts for the doors we see most around the south suburbs.
Custom sections, obsolete opener boards and glazing generally need ordering. Where that happens we say so on site, get the door closed and the building secured, and give you a straight answer about the return visit. Making it safe and finishing it are two separate jobs, and the first does not wait for the second. The estimate is free either way.

Questions
South Holland questions about this job
The door is jammed half open and it is late. Can it be left until morning?
Only if nobody needs to be under it and nothing is parked in the opening. Do not force it either way and do not pull the release cord while it is suspended. Lock the door between the garage and the house, keep people out of the garage, and get on the phone to us early.
The power is out and my car is behind the door.
With the door down, pull the release handle and lift by hand. A door in good balance comes up easily. If it feels like lifting a person, stop, because the counterbalance has failed and the full weight is on you. When power returns, close the door fully before re-engaging the trolley.
Does a strange noise count as an emergency?
A bang followed by a door that will not lift does. A grinding sound while the door still runs its full travel usually does not, and is better booked as an ordinary visit inside a few days. Tell us what you heard and what the door did afterwards, and we will tell you honestly which of the two it is.
