The Right Grease, in the Right Six Places
Most garage doors that squeal have already been sprayed with the wrong thing. WD-40 is a solvent and a water displacer, not a lubricant. It cleans, it creeps, and it evaporates, and what it leaves behind is a stripped, dry surface that squeals again in a couple of weeks, usually louder than before, because the old grease left with it.

What a door wants is a proper lithium or silicone garage door lubricant, applied to six places and deliberately kept off two others. That distinction is most of the job, and it is why a five-minute application done correctly outlasts a can emptied over everything.
Where it goes, and where it must never go
It goes on hinge pivot points, on roller stems and any exposed bearing race, along the torsion spring coils as a light wiped film, into the end bearing plates and the center bearing, onto the opener chain or screw shaft, and on the lock bar and any keyed cylinder in the door. That is the list. Six positions, done properly, and the door goes quiet.
It never goes inside the track. The track is a guide surface, not a bearing surface, and grease there does exactly one thing: collects grit and turns into a lapping paste that grinds roller tires and stems away. Tracks get wiped out with a dry cloth. Nothing goes on a belt-drive belt either, and nothing on the tire of a nylon roller.
Cold garages, and why January is when it shows
An unheated detached garage in South Holland goes below freezing and stays there for weeks at a time. Thin oils thicken. Grease that has been collecting road salt and grit since November sets hard in the bearings. Hinges that were merely stiff become genuinely tight.
That is why a door which was only a bit noisy in November stops lifting altogether on a cold January morning. The opener is fighting accumulated friction on top of springs that have stiffened in the cold, and the weakest part of the system gives first. Doing this before the temperature drops is worth considerably more than doing it after.
The rest of the tune-up
Lubrication on its own is a short visit and about half a job, so the rest goes with it. Hinge and bracket fasteners get checked, because they back out steadily from vibration. The door gets balance-tested by hand with the opener released. Opener force and travel limits get reset so the door seats on the seal without straining.
The photo eyes get wiped and realigned, the bottom seal gets checked for hardening and splitting at the ends, and the tracks get cleaned out. That combination is what turns a door that is quiet this afternoon into a door that is still quiet next winter.

Questions
South Holland questions about this job
How often should this be done?
Twice a year suits this climate: once ahead of the freeze and once in spring after the salt has stopped. A lightly used door in a dry attached garage is fine on an annual rhythm. A detached garage with no heat benefits from the twice-yearly pattern more than most.
Can I do it myself?
Most of it, yes, with the right product, the door closed and the opener unplugged. Wipe the tracks rather than spraying them. The two things to leave alone are the bottom brackets, which sit under full cable tension, and any adjustment to spring winding. A light film on the outside of the coils is fine; nothing else on the springs is.
It went quiet for a week and then the noise came straight back.
That usually means either the wrong product, which flashed off, or that the noise was never a lubrication problem. A flat-spotted roller, a collapsed bearing, a loose rear hanger or a door running out of square will all come back through fresh grease within days.
