When one lets go the whole load shifts sideways in an instant. The door drops at that corner, wedges itself against the track, and every part above it is suddenly loaded in a direction it was not designed for.
It starts at the bottom corner, and wood fails differently
Each cable anchors to a bracket bolted through the bottom section. On a steel door that corner corrodes from the inside out, fed by water thrown off a flat drive and salt carried in on tyres. On the wood doors still hanging on plenty of garages around here the failure is different: the fixings work loose in timber that has taken years of damp at floor level, and the bracket begins to shift before anything visibly breaks.
You can usually catch this while it is still small. With the door shut, look at the last hand's width of cable above each bottom bracket. Rust bloom, a single strand standing proud of the lay, or a bright arc scored into the door skin all mean the same thing. What you should not do is put a spanner on anything down there, because that bracket carries the entire closed-door load.
Drums, and why a cable seldom fails on its own
A cable that has jumped its drum did not decide to. Something moved first: a spring that lost tension, a drum that has worn a burr into its groove, or a door closed onto a bin or a bumper so the cable went slack for a second. Winding it back on without settling that question buys a few weeks.
So the drums get examined for grooving and burring, the shaft for play in its bearings, the springs for the tension they are actually delivering, and the track for anything letting the door run out of square. More often than not the cable is the symptom rather than the fault.
Matched lengths, even tension, then a hand check
Cables go on two at a time, cut to matched lengths. Pairing a new cable with a stretched survivor leaves two different lengths on the same door, and it will pull out of square again long before the second cable was due for changing.
With both fitted, the drums are reset to the same position on the shaft and the tension evened up. The door is then cycled several times with the opener disconnected, watched for drift across the opening, and hand-balanced at the halfway point before anyone calls it finished.

Is a broken cable the same job as a broken spring?
Different parts, frequently related. A spring letting go shock-loads both cables, so a snapped cable is often the second thing that happened rather than the first. We look at the whole counterbalance before quoting, because replacing one and ignoring the other is not a repair.
Can I lift the door by hand until you arrive?
Better not to. With one cable gone the door is being lifted from a single corner, which drags it across the track and can pull it out of the rails entirely. Leave it where it sits, keep the car clear of the opening if you can, and let us take the load off properly.
The cable looks sound at the bottom but the door is noisy near the top.
Look at the drum end. Cables wear where they wind, and a strand breaking up on the drum gives a tick or a scrape at the same point in every cycle. It is the same failure happening in the one place nobody thinks to check.
